In July of 2017, the New York Rangers announced that they had agreed to the terms of a three-year, entry-level contract with forward Filip Chytil. Only 17 years old, Chytil skated 38 games in the Czech Extraliga during the past hockey season.
Chytil is one of 21 players under the age of 18 who played in the Czech Extraliga in the 2016–17 season and is ranked second among all players in the league under 18 in goals, points, and games played. Chytil has represented the Czech Republic in several hockey tournaments, including the 2017 IIHF U18 World Championship and the 2017 Five Nations Tournament. He was 21st overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and was selected by the Rangers in the first round.
