Core texts of the Trumpening
I thought it would be useful to compile a list of the most important writings on Trump’s remarkable rise to the presidency. All content is dated pre-election and sorted in chronological order.
Some will consider this a highly biased, idiosyncratic list. It is. I am only including items that I, personally, find original, insightful, and provocative (not that I necessarily agree with them). Your mileage may vary.
It’s also a relatively short list, as I believe that careful reading and contemplation of a handful of well-chosen texts can be more powerful than consuming an ocean of knowledge.
If you had read all of these articles (and one book), and ignored the entirety of the mainstream media and pundit class, you would have seen Trump’s victory coming and understood exactly why it was happening.
Chateau Heartise, “The Trumpening Puts The Heads Of His Enemies On Pikes And Shows You How To Be An Alpha Male” (8/8/15) — I believe this was the article that first put the Trump phenomenon “on the map” for me, marking the start of an obsession .
Scott Adams, “Clown Genius” (8/13/15) — The Dilbert cartoonist’s entire “Master Persuader” series on his blog is a gold mine of insight. His early articles in the series (August-October 2015) convinced me right off the bat that Trump would almost certainly win the presidency. In this article dated Aug 24, 2015, Adams predicted that Trump would win the general election “by a large margin.” Here is another particularly memorable item, on Trump’s “linguistic kill shot” aimed at Jeb Bush.
Dan McLaughlin, “Military Strategist Explains Why Donald Trump Leads — And How He Will Fail” (12/16/15) — “Few candidates in recent political memory have been so effective at altering the reality around them in a way that crashes their opponents’ OODA Loops.”
Eamonn Fingleton, “After South Carolina, Here’s Why Donald Trump Will Be America’s Next President” (2/21/16) — It’s the trade, stupid.
John C. Wright, “Real and Delusional America” (2/22/16) — “The enemy is the Press.”
John Robb, “Trump’s Insurgency (a must read)” (2/29/16) — Trump’s campaign explained as an open-source insurgency. Robb also predicts here that Trump could take the White House.
David Frum, “Conservatives Face an Impossible Choice” (3/12/16) — “This election closes a long period in American politics. Whatever comes next, that period will not return.”
Donald J. Trump, Foreign Policy Speech (4/27/16) — “America First will be the major and overriding theme of my administration…We will no longer surrender this country or its people to the false song of globalism. The nation-state remains the true foundation for happiness and harmony.”
David P. Goldman, “In Alien vs. Predator, I’m for Predator, Because He’s OUR Predator” (5/11/16)
John Red Eagle and Vox Day, Cuckservative (5/23/16) — The Prologue of this book offers excellent background on the immigration crises in Europe and America and how they paved the way for Trump. In his earlier book SJWs Always Lie: Taking Down the Thought Police (10/13/15), Vox also touches on the Trump phenomenon, writing: “Trump’s unexpected popularity in the polls is, to a large extent, a consequence of his willingness to confront the SJW Narrative and speak the truth as he sees it.”
Peter Hitchens, “A Few Reflections on Mr Donald Trump” (6/2/16) — “Can any of these people even begin to deliver what they promise, or prevent the things they rail against? If not, what happens when the voters find this out?”
Bruce Charlton, “Hillary Clinton versus Donald Trump: The Demonic candidate versus an Antichrist” (7/28/16)
Rod Dreher, “Trump On The Bayou” (8/19/16) — ‘We lost everything, but we knew you would come!’
Publius Decius Mus, “The Flight 93 Election” (9/5/16) — The most important essay of the year.
Chateau Heartiste, “The Truth: Donald J. Trump Is A Great Man” (10/3/16)
Donald J. Trump, “Crossroads” Speech (10/31/16) — “This is not simply another four-year election. This is a crossroads in the history of our civilization that will determine whether or not we the people reclaim control over our government.”
Richard B. Spencer, “The Napoleon of the Current Year” (11/3/16) — I am not a “white nationalist” but I find this to be a profound analysis of the true significance of Trump. “But for us, and the world, the Trump phenomenon is much bigger than the man. He is a vehicle, unwittingly, bringing forth ideas and emotions that are terrifying to The System.”
