The Long Tail: a publisher underground solution for more audience
The Long Tail has been around for a long time, and it was Chris Anderson (the editor of Wired) who came up with the term in 2004 in his article “Business Model of the Future.” But what is it exactly? Well, the Long Tail consists of all small niches that we are interested in. If you are in the publishing industry, for example, these niches would be composed of self-publishing, print-on-demand, backlists, fanzines, webzines, and niche-interest blogs — like this one!
The Long Tail Opportunity
Believe it or not the Long Tail opportunity is actually easy to achieve. It consists of our ability to produce and share high-quality content in order to reach our niche markets. Thanks to the internet, readers have more access to information; however, finding what they are looking for is not that easy when there is a never-ending sea of content.
But don’t give up on the Long Tail just yet! You see, all you need is a pinch of creativity and a little bit of technology!
As I mentioned before, it is our duty, as publishers, to generate high-quality content. Why not generate high-quality content for our niche markets? Do not try to make one web site the most popular when you can have many. This is where the Long Tail comes in… These extra pages that you will create will cater the different niche markets out there.
Yes, it’s important to have your “best seller” queries on your site, but those popular words are found on many other websites. The Long Tail means less competition because not everybody will have what you are offering, which means that you will gain popularity and most importantly, profit.
The Long Tail Cost — Worth It?
I know you must be thinking this is impossible and expensive because the infinite amount of data you, as a publisher, have in your archives. Well, while this was ridiculous and time consuming before because you would have to do it manually, now it is possible with automated softwares like Storyzy.
While before you could only re-use articles with Storyzy, now you can also enrich your website with data and pieces of content such as quotes from people on the news extracted automatically. It creates new web pages that will cater your niche markets without you having to worry about doing it manually!
