What mamas really want on Mother’s Day

What would my perfect Mamas Day look like?

Every mama would be well fed and supported both physically and emotionally. Our children would be safe. Law enforcement would put their guns away. Legislators would spend (at least!) one day a year listening to what mamas need and putting collaborative structures in place so that we can influence the design of family-impacting policies and laws.

What a gift that would be! Every day I work to contribute to the creation of a world like that, where woman and children are protected and have voice. Mamahood can be rough and complicated — but every act of kindness (babysitting, family-friendly environments, equal pay and fair time off, a smile, a hello, a compliment, an affirming look) can nourish and nurture the incredible women in our lives. Safe and supported women create safe and supported children and families.

Join me in sending some love to the mamas who inspire and strengthen you every day: Make a free eCard at MamasDay.org.

Mothering isn’t an individual act — it happens in community, in collaboration, in context. But it’s easy for mamas to feel isolated, especially on a hyper-commercialized holiday like Mother’s Day.

That’s why it’s so important for us to celebrate each other, to love and protect our children together, and to tell our stories so our families, our mamas, and our children remain visible. Sending a MamasDay.org card is more than just sending some kind words to a strong mama in your life. It’s about changing the face of mamahood we see in mainstream culture, and lifting up all the ways mamas nourish our communities each and every day.

So what are you waiting for? Visit MamasDay.org and pick the eCard your mama will love. Write a short message, and that’s it! We’ll deliver the eCard to your mama for free.

We will one day live in a world that looks like my perfect Mamas Day. So keep fighting — and keep loving each other. We’re in this together.
