I started running almost a year and half back when I joined a startup in fitness space. I was quite intrigued after meeting runners.

I have been regularly running since then without any second thoughts. Last Tuesday, one of my company colleague asked - “Why do you run? If there is no music you get bored in the long run. Why not go for gym?”. This started my hunt for reasons.

To lose weight, maybe?

There is no denying that a large section of runners have this goal in mind or did start with. But that’s not what drives you out of bed to venture into running every alternate day. In facts, there are many easy routes to lose weight fast. Further, if you hangout with any running group you will find people running from 3–4 years and are still fat. Lastly, it doesn’t explain why so many fit people run.

Well! Is it just to stay fit?

If you prefer agility over muscle gain, then running is a good option. But chances of injury and motivational requirement to push, makes it tough choice. Ask people who are fit and run - is staying fit their primary reason for running? The answer will be no. There are far more effective and enjoyable routes available — sports, gym, zumba classes etc.
