What success really looks like in open source

As someone new to OSS, something I would -love- is more of a focus on small issues that help people get involved. Because there’s often not that much documentation on the inner workings of a project, it’s hard to just “pick an issue to work on”, because without greater context of the whole system, it’s difficult to know if I’m breaking something. To be fair however, I don’t really think this is something that can be blamed on current maintainers of a project; the point is more that the tooling isn’t really there other than creating a GitHub issue category for “newcomers”, etc., which not all projects have.
