Ideas for students participating at Startup Weekend Ottawa: uOttawa Edition # 2 — Feb 26–28, 2016

The world is getting more connected. Everyday objects embedded with sensors are increasingly becoming “smarter”. IoT is hot.

Opportunities for startups will abound as this technology disrupts industries far and wide.

More and more, hardware startups are incorporating a form of connectivity through Bluetooth or internet and are disrupting traditional business models. Many of these startups use off-the-shelf open-source hardware for early proof of concepts and prototyping. The Pebble Smartwatch, created by the Vancouver-based startup Pebble Technology, is a perfect example of the evolution from open-source hardware to a marketable Internet of Things product. The very first Pebble created was prototyped using an Arduino Uno, an open-source micro-controller, and an old cellphone display. With time and many iterations, it evolved to the Pebble Time, the smartwatch that raised $1M within 49 minutes of it’s release on Kickstarter and closing with total of over $20M within 40 days.

StudIoT, a student-led venture supported by the University of Ottawa Entrepreneurship Hub, will offer a $500 prize to the student team with the most promising IoT startup idea at the Feb 26–28 Startup Weekend. Not IoT savvy? Don’t worry. We will have mentors available on Saturday Feb 27th to walk you through the basics of IoT and answer your questions.

StudIoT develops and implements innovative IoT solutions using open-source hardware and software. We are especially keen about the potential of IoT in agriculture!

We invite you to connect with us on Twitter (for cool stuff in IoT), e-mail us to join our Slack online community (learn about our projects and how you can get involved) and read our content on Medium (where we take a deep dive on IoT topics that we care about).
