The use of SEO can be a valid and justified way to grab readers attention to one’s’ content, that is if it is used in an ethical manner. The issue is that many harness the power of SEO in order to gain page ranking through or by creating dubious headlines and hashtags.

“Here’s an example of the meta keywords being used in the correct manner,

<meta name=”Keywords” content=”Online marketing, digital marketing, search marketing, search engine marketing, e-mail marketing, SEO” />

Here’s an example of the meta keywords tag being used incorrectly for a page promoting a restaurant called “MadeUp”,

<meta name=”keywords” content=”Restaurant,restaurants,food,feed,take away food,fast food,junk food,eat,eating out,dinner,dining,meal,eating,MadeUp,steak and chips,chicken and chips,pie and chips,pudding,desert,big restaurant,small restaurant,best restaurant,great restaurant, exclusive restaurant,cocktails,wine,drink,pizza,sandwhiches”>”

The internet gives the opportunity for anyone to publish content online, resulting in a high volume of content. By using SEO properly to attract readers’ attention is a necessary occurrence. The issue is just what are ethical SEO practices, and what aren’t?

If another site is receiving more traffic than you are then by all means consider altering your SEO to a more suitable one. Or if a headline isn’t receiving much traffic, change it.

Original: Civil-rights groups assail FBI tactics as San Jose man set to be in court for Oakland bank bomb plot

Revise: San Jose man in bank bomb plot: Terrorist or delusional wannabe?”

Graph shows traffic with original headline and then the revised one.

Although there are guidelines in place one still needs to use their deductive reasoning skills regarding what is ethical SEO. Furthermore, authors who do not use SEO must face the reality that their content being found by a wider audience is very slim. However, if it is not used ethically then no amount of visitors is going to make up for the credibility a site will lose.
