In conversation with Kaya Scott from Sassy Mama Dubai
This week we interviewed Kaya Scott, blogger and a full time Sassy Mama! We sat down with her to ask what her favourite shopping destinations are, her style tips for pregnant women and her plans for the future.
1. How did Sassy Mamas come about?
Sassy Mama Dubai launched just over 3 years ago. I found the Singapore and Hong Kong sites when browsing the net, loved what I saw, contacted Sassy Media Group about setting up in Dubai and the rest is history! One of the original Sassy Media Group Founders, Sofia, also happened to be moving to Dubai with her family so we did it all together.
2. Where are some of your favourite shopping destinations in Dubai?
The shopping malls are super convenient as you’ve got everything under one roof. Dubai Mall is amazing but takes some navigating — I love heading to some of the smaller malls for ease and for one-off shops and boutiques. We also have an outlet mall for picking up some fabulous bargains and designer wear at a fraction of its usual price.
3. What style tips do you have for pregnant women?
Mainly I’d say try to recycle your own clothing and don’t go nuts buying loads of new stuff! A good pair of maternity jeans paired with some of your tops that’ll fit (vests etc) and layer with cardigans. Same goes with maxi dresses, lots of the non-maternity ones look great over a bump. I’d also avoid much of the maternity sections and go for stuff you usually love but a couple of sizes up — and choose affordable maternity options from GAP and ASOS — some of their plain jersey dresses for example look amazing with a statement necklace.
4. How has your style evolved since becoming a mum?
Funnily enough I’d say I’m more confident with my own personal style now than I ever have been, I’ve embraced what works for me personally (thank god for cool work out gear too — perfect for throwing on in the morning and still looking ok!). These days it’s about comfort as much as looking good — I’m hopeless at high heels so I just avoid them completely unless I’m going out in the evening and I still have a little bit of a tummy (will it ever go!?) so I avoid anything that cling to my middle. I really enjoy gorgeous fabrics much more now as there’s nothing worse than feeling scratchy or sweaty while running after 3 little ones! I love the opportunity to go out and get dressed up (sadly doesn’t happen often enough!).
I shop much less but I buy key pieces that I can mix and match or treat myself to, usually something a little bit more expensive (am a huge fan of sample/preloved sales) because I know it’ll be something I can wear for years rather than just for a season.
5. What will you be wearing in August?
I’m in the UK for the whole of August so I need to be clever about what to pack given how unpredictable the weather can be! I’ll be wearing my striped tees from & Other Stories paired with my Zara camo pants and trainers, I’ve got a gorgeous floral maxi dress that’s perfect with a denim jacket and, if the sun shines, I’ll be in cut-off shorts and a slogan tee.
6. What plans do you have for the future?
I’m a dreamer and my plans change constantly! I’d be keen to establish Sassy Mama in other markets/countries , I have a yearning to travel the world as much as possible with my family and one day I want my own vegetable patch, chickens and a whole menagerie of animals.
and finally where can people find you?
