Film and Fashion’s Style 601 Niche Media Founder, Cedric Armand, gets Reality Checked (Video)
Atlanta, Georgia — December 31, 2015 — Founder of film and fashion media brand Style 601, Cedric Armand talks Start — Up Leadership, Realties Facing Minority Founders, and the Uncertainties with Starting a New Business
You can never anticipate the magnitude of the unforeseen challenges when starting a new venture. As Entrepreneurs and market analyst we look at things like the environment and economy but it’s hard to anticipate earthquakes, hurricanes, or even cyber attacks. There’s insurance for such things, however if you are pre launch then you are probably still looking at feasibility in some areas and haven’t fully protected yourself against tragedy or maybe you haven’t even made it to that level of commitment. After all we are a startup and haven’t even launched yet.
What is the likely hood of starting a promising venture and being sexually harassed and assaulted at your part time job? Beyond the likely hood of the occurrence how do you overcome that kind of challenge?
Where exactly does the conversation begin?
Well, it’s been about three years for me and I guess it’s time to figure it out. Truth is I’ve always had legal drama in my life as a minority. From 2004 to 2010 and again in 2012. I haven’t quite figured out how to protect myself where the law/government seems to be ineffective in prevention. I truly believe it’s nothing short of a miracle that I can even express myself although the statement time heals all has a natural kind of feel to it. Healing is important to the mind, body, spirit and yet time stops for no man.
Does the venture stop because I’m hurt? Do I still have a business after years of litigation? If so where exactly does my venture stand? Are we still considered start up? There so many added questions when dealing with unforeseen events.
Webster’s definition of leadership is “the power or ability to lead other people” followed by its definition of lead a “to guide on a way especially by going in advance”
I’d spent a few years leading Style 601 as a venture with success. I must say it’s pretty fun spending the time and effort doing something and experiencing a desired result. That is what the formation of Style 601 was for me. A desired result of time and effort. Taking three years as a setback doesn’t speak to much leadership but definitely questions your character as a leader.
The position of leadership or the role was redefined by unpredictability. I no longer had the advantage of organization, strategy, and execution. I was now faced with weather or not we could survive. If we could hold our place in the market as a start up that was influential and relevant. We’d become faced with reassessing the market as well as our capacity to compete as a brand. We’ve seen our competitors take advantage in areas that were strategic to our success; serving in areas that were being underserved in a way that highlighted key areas of importance.
Not only has the market changed but society has changed as well. There’s a nationwide #blacklivesmatter moment that deserves the industry’s attention shifting momentum and questioning the future of the nation’s youth. The question how do we respond to such injustice seems to be one of ample proportion. How do young minorities specifically African Americans overcome killing after killing after killing after killing by our local government officers? How do we begin to repair communities? Where should our nation’s focus be? All the while I’m embattled with my own legal turmoil as an African American business owner.
Leadership in the unforeseen is not leadership it’s more a test of persistence, durability, and duration. Now is the time to figure out where that leaves us.
