Last year I finished 3rd in a trail half-marathon and I was so excited because it was my first ever podium (after a long period of fat dad non-activity). At the post-race awards ceremony when it was time to call my name, they announced some other runner. It was just a terrible feeling. Not just the disappointment but also embarrassment that I cared so much about something so trivial. The race director eventually sorted it out (the guy who took my spot only completed two thirds of the course) and writing about it here makes it feel SUPER trivial. But boy did it suck at the time.
