3 reasons why I had to delete my Facebook and Instagram accounts.

I was introduced to Facebook quite late in my life. It was only on August, 2012 that I created my first (and only) account on Facebook and I was 18 years of age back then. My friends were already engaged in sending “friend requests” and “poking” by then but I was quite oblivious towards these jargons.

I had actively used Facebook for 6 years before finally bidding it adieu on 21st of March, 2018. During my tenure as an overly addicted Facebook user, I had no inkling of the fact that it was tenaciously gripping my life. I was even making my life decisions based on opinions by other users without any regards to the real world out there. Its been 6 months now and I have managed to stay out of that dark and gloomy but disguised as a pleasantly wonderful world and I have no intentions to relapse in the near future.

I can cite many reasons as to why one should avoid being addicted to Facebook/Instagram but I have managed to compile which I believe should be the top 3 reasons.

  1. Absolute waste of time

I have wasted countless hours pondering over other people’s lives on Facebook which could have been used to build a better version of myself. I have spent a considerable amount of time wasting money and time to do things which I hoped will impress people whom I had never met in my entire life.

2. It breeds insecurity and makes you feel depressed

A majority of people today tend to share every moment of their lives on Facebook in exchange for “likes” and “comments”. I have seen people going out on vacations for the sole purpose of posting pics on their Instagram and Facebook accounts. Public display of fake magnanimity is also rampant across the social media website. Not everyone could afford such lavish lifestyle thus breeding a sense of lowliness and depression among others.

3. Fake news, fake news

We live in a generation where we are continuously being fed by fake news. Every time I used to login to my account, I used to be bombarded by all sort of news items which I knew were definitely fake. The Facebook-Cambridge Analytica scandal sent shivers down my spine when I first heard about it. WhatsApp in India has become a factory for fake news/information in today's India. Many forwards are made to degrade a certain party, organization or person and Mark Zuckerberg seem to be oblivious towards this. Riots have also occurred in different parts of the world owing to misinformation propagated via Facebook.

I am not saying that Facebook has only propagated negativity in the world. It has definitely contributed immensely towards a more connected world and like a coin, it has also failed in some aspects where it has proved to be detrimental.
