Syntax and Semantics: Science-Fiction
Semantics of a film are the costumes, props, setting, acting, and whatever other materials a film may possess. Syntax of a film is how a film is arranged, giving the movie a deeper internal meaning. An example of the use of semantics can be seen in a science-fiction movie, when lots of props and acting are used. People can be seen screaming if there is danger, and the setting is utilized in a manner that would exemplify the action or magnitude of the action. The use of syntax would involve the main character fighting his or her way through something, to kill enemies, et cetera. The syntax can create exposition, the climax, and the resolution of the film. When properly combined with semantics, the film can turn out great because these two elements define genres of film. The use of these two elements can be seen in the Incredible Hulk and movies involving the Hulk, as he was made during a gamma radiation accident involving Bruce Banner, a former military scientist. During the movies, Banner is faced not only with internal conflict of subduing his anger (otherwise he will transform into the monster), but he also has to evade the US military and government as well as fight enemies such as the Leader or the Abomination. There are many extras in the movies because many screaming people are needed in a scene involving the Hulk tearing up the setting, so props are arranged to fit the narrative. The syntax of the film involves Banner solving his internal and external problems, including his relationship between himself and the daughter of a top US military general. Banner fights his way through the many challenges of a wanted man, highlighting the syntax of the Hulk films.
