How to Get Rid of Pantry Moths

Remove everything from the pantry. In order to clean the pantry thoroughly, it needs to be completely empty. Only getting rid of infested food won’t be enough to exterminate these pests.

  • This includes all opened and unopened food items, crockery, and any cooking equipment that you might store in there. Anything on top of a shelf needs to be removed before you can start cleaning.

Getting Rid of Pantry Moths the Natural Way

Give Your Pantry a Thorough Cleaning: Pull out your shelf liners (and wash or replace them). Vacuum the shelves, paying special attention to the corners, undersides, shelf brackets, and mounting hardware. Vacuum the walls, baseboards, trim, floor, ceiling and door (including the inside edge, hinges, and knob). Then, wipe down your pantry shelves with hot, soapy water or vinegar; and mop the floor. When you’re done with your clean up, remove the vacuum bag, and take it out to your outside trash bin (wash out the dust compartment, if you used a bagless vacuum). You don’t want to harbor moth larvae in your vacuum.

Tips for Dealing With Clothes and Pantry Moths in Your Home

Once you discover a moth infestation, you need to clear out all the moths, caterpillars and eggs.

“If it’s in carpet, vacuum it up and expose the area to as much light and openness as possible,” Dr Edwards said.

“They like nice dark corners, and if it’s behind a piece of furniture or something like that, then move the furniture and expose the whole area.”

Don’t undo your pantry cleaning by returning infested containers of food to the shelves! Open each one and inspect the contents for signs of moths or other pests. Again, you’ll have to decide whether to toss or freeze contaminated foodstuff but I recommend discarding it.

Be sure to wash and dry the outside of all food storage containers before returning them to your clean pantry, even the ones which show no signs of infestation. Washing will ensure that you’re not overlooking hidden eggs.

How to Get Rid of Pantry Moths and Worms

Consider placing some meal-moth pheromone traps (widely available online and in hardware, garden, and home-supply stores). These traps monitor the presence of meal moths, and perhaps prevent a future infestation. The traps work by attracting the male moths, who then become stuck to glue boards and die, unable to fertilize female moths. (Warning: Some folks find the glue traps a bit gruesome, since the trapped moths aren’t killed quickly, but flutter for some time before dying. )
