Why the Small Things Matter

It can seem pointless to write a tweet, jog for a mile, or stop for a few seconds to notice your surroundings, especiallly when there is a more intense version of these already on your schedule. But these little things, in conjunction with the big, are larger than the sum of their parts. One simple reason is your good habits get reenforced. It shouldn’t always be the case that when you workout you’re red lining to get the most out of this precious opportunity. It is also reputable to go for a short jog just for the scenery or to work on your form or speed. You may find that your joints hurt less on longer jogs because they build up a resistance on what would’ve been your days off. Maybe instead of checking Instagram or Twitter you spend that time coming up with a few more ideas for the story you’re writing or looking for background music for the video you’re editing. So instead of simply waiting for that deprivation tank session, at the end of the week, take some time to notice the sights and sounds around you, at the coffee shop, and help spread your mindfulness to your everyday life.
