Dakota Access Pipeline Protesters Abandon Some of Their Dogs with Their Trash

Often you can judge the character of a person by the way they treat their children and their pets. If that assessment is accurate then the protesters at the Dakota Access Pipeline who left their dogs behind with the trash, may not rate very high in the eyes of the public.

Several hundred protesters from the Oceti Sakowin camp were asked to leave by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe who believed they could better negotiate with the Army Corps of Engineers without protesters being involved.

And leave they did, abandoning trash and some of their dogs.

Two dogs and six puppies were left homeless at the camp but were later rescued by Furry Friends Rockin Rescue in Bismarck, North Dakota.

According to the organization, the two rescued dogs showed signs of frost bit ears and patchy hair, an indication of an extended stay outdoors in freezing temperatures.

Tiffany Hardy, a volunteer with the rescue spoke about the abandoned dogs and said:

“Extremely sad being these guys were left behind. But we offer, Furry Friends offers hope. I mean there’s so much hope within Furry Friends as far as these puppies finding homes.”
“We have a couple cases of mange, we might have had some, I know we’ve had some problems with claws that haven’t been clipped before.”

The group is hoping to return to the camp to look for other abandoned animals but say they’re having a difficult time rescuing them because they are running away from the loud noises caused by heavy machinery used at the site.

Julie Schirado from the rescue said about the efforts:

“It’s a mess down there, so it’s really, really hard to find these animals and get them.”
“If they stay with us, we help them find their fur-ever home. If somebody has left the dog behind and they’re looking for that dog, we hope they’ll contact us so we can help them find their dog.”

The rescue is looking for help from the general public.

Go to furryfriendsrockinrescue.org if you would like to donate. They need food, blankets, and money to help with the vet bills for these animals.

It’s so difficult to understand how protesters who claim to feel so passionate about one cause can completely ignore the health and welfare of a defenseless animal.

Thank goodness for “guardian angels” like Furry Friends Rockin Rescue who are there to help!
