Navy Veteran Beaten Into Coma By Illegal Immigrant from Honduras, Dies of His Injuries

Tragically, there has been another death reportedly at the hands of an illegal immigrant in this country.

Jose Luis Oviedo, a U.S. Navy veteran who served this country for 9 years and also served in Operation Desert Storm was beaten into a coma by a Honduran national and died, according to McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez.

Charges are expected to be upgraded to capital murder.

Police report that Andres Roberto Ortiz stole Oviedo’s truck and crashed it into a canal last month.

On Sunday, January 29, according to statements, Oviedo was home alone when he heard a noise in his backyard. He confronted thieves who were trying to steal his vehicle and was beaten unconscious.

When the police found Oviedo’s truck abandoned in a ditch a few hours later, they came to his home only to discover him unconscious in the backyard. Police made the connection to Ortiz 10 days later.

Oviedo was beaten so severely that he was placed on life support at the McAllen Medical Center but later died of his injuries on February 24. He was only 56 years old.

He leaves behind a wife of 20 years and a 29 year old son.

Oviedo was reportedly in the VA72 Bluehawks Squadron stationed out of Florida. He served time on the CV66 USS America, USS Independence and USS Saratoga.

He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from for six years in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Funeral Services will be held at Del Angel Chapel of Remembrance in Mission, Texas on Wednesday, March 1st. Visitation hours will be from 2pm-9pm. Funeral Service will take place on Thursday March 2nd 10am at Del Angel Funeral Chapel of Remembrance.
