Another senseless and preventable crime happened last week in North Carolina allegedly at the hands of an illegal immigrant.

Jesus Reyes Lopez, who is a Mexican citizen and 20 years old, is accused of starting a fire that left 130 innocent victims homeless and 40 apartments damaged.

Police report that the fire was intentionally set and estimate the cost of the damage to be $1.3 million.

Lopez faces charges of first-degree attempted murder and first-degree arson. Additionally, he also faces a charge of damage to property by using an incendiary device.

A cellphone video shows just how bad the flames were and the chaos that ensued as people can be heard yelling ‘fire’ and telling people to evacuate the building.

Seven people were hospitalized after trying to escape the fire.

Other families, like Anselmo Martinez and his family were forced to jump from third story windows to avoid being engulfed in flames.

Martinez said, “I grabbed my daughter, and I didn’t think twice.” Martinez reportedly threw his 4-year-old out of the window to safety

Thankfully, everyone in the Martinez family got out unharmed, except for Martinez’s wife who fractured a bone in her back while trying to flee the fire.

Helmer Valle and his family also couldn’t escape through the door because of smoke so he and his wife threw their two children, an 8-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl, out of a window to neighbors who were waiting below to catch them. Valle suffered a leg injury during the jump.

The American Red Cross housed the displaced families in a temporary shelter at nearby middle school where 80 residents slept on cots. Now the organization is trying to relocate 130 families to similar apartments for a more permanent solution.

And why did this all happen?

Reportedly because Lopez was targeting an ex-girlfriend when the fire was set and it got out of control.

In the past, Charlotte had a policy of instructing its police officers not to inquire about a person’s immigration status which arguably rendered the city an ‘unofficial’ sanctuary city.

However, currently Charlotte is reportedly complying with HB 318, a bill which forbids actions that would prohibit in part, North Carolina cities from passing sanctuary city ordinances that seek to build trust by limiting local law enforcement’s cooperation with the federal government over civil immigration matters.

If Lopez is released, he will immediately be taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
