(VIDEO) Lansing Reversed Its Earlier Decision to Become a ‘Sanctuary City’
What a difference a week makes. After debating Tucker Carlson of Fox News about the reasons why Lansing, Michigan should call itself a “sanctuary city,” Lansing’s Democratic Mayor Virgil Bernero has changed his mind.
A week prior, Bernero had strongly defended his city’s position to call itself a “sanctuary city” in an interview (see below) with Carlson. However, a week later everything has changed.
Bernero told Carlson that his viewers and others within Lansing began to speak out in opposition to the sanctuary city label after his appearance on Fox News.
The city also received a letter from the Lansing Regional Chamber and Michigan Chamber of Commerce following Bernero’s decision opposing Lansing’s designation as a “sanctuary city.”
Naturally, many are concerned with facing legal battles with the Trump administration after U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions promised to crackdown if cities did not cooperate with police and U.S. immigration authorities when illegal immigrants were involved.
Some business groups also wrote to Bernero saying:
“Lansing is a diverse community, rich with history and culture. It’s what makes our city a welcoming destination to live, work and thrive. Recent actions of City Council, whether intended or not, have placed an unnecessary target on the city of Lansing while jeopardizing millions of dollars in federal funding that impacts the city budget.”
The Trump administration has released weekly reports of cities that aren’t cooperating with federal efforts to find and deport illegal immigrants.
However, the Department of Homeland Security has temporarily halted these reports due to inaccuracies found within them.
The Lansing City Council decided to revisit the issue and in a vote Wednesday evening, they voted 5–2 to reverse course after last week’s 6–0 vote in favor of calling itself a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants.
After the vote, advocates in favor of keeping the sanctuary city designation threatened the City Council with losing their “seats” in upcoming elections and told them they were “spineless.”
