I was very glad to see this this short talk.

Thanks, Gary! I will share that article with Dr. Lurie and others who work in emergency response.

I’m struck by the opportunity we see over & over when a community experiences a crisis. Anna Young of MakerNurse has talked about the literature review she did, looking for examples of innovation by nurses. Over the last 100 years, the most innovative periods of time were during a natural disaster or other crisis. Nurses came through with solutions.

This pattern also reminds me of what we know about individuals’ response to crisis. When people learn that they have a life-changing diagnosis, it often flips a switch in them. They change their behavior or look for new solutions, sometimes desperately.

How might we harness that energy in the every-day? How might we spark innovation and change before there is a personal or community crisis?
