AFUWI Holds 20th Annual Awards Gala

A New York-based executive, Susanne Lieu received her juris doctor degree at Northwestern University School of Law. At present, she serves as managing director at Ruben Companies, a firm which operates office buildings and apartments in several states including Boston, New York, and Washington, DC. Susanne Lieu is an active supporter of American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI), a non-profit organization which provides scholarship grants to Caribbean nationals and funds projects for the development of the University of West Indies.

Last February 23, 2017, the organization held its 20th annual awards gala — a fundraiser to support the cause of AFUWI for the benefit of its scholars and grantees. Themed “The Legacy Continues,” the awards gala also honored prominent individuals and institutions who had exceptional achievements towards their fields in industry.

Rep. Yvette Clarke, New York 11th District’s representative to the House of Representatives, was this year’s recipient of the prestigious Hon. Shirley Chisholm Award. Several awards were also given to outstanding honorees including Vice Chancellor’s Achievement Award to Rachel Baker, and Caribbean Luminary Award to musician Estelle.

The “Champions of Community Engagement” award was also received by different outstanding institutions including Sesame Flyers International, Dennis Shipping Co., the Kimberly Hotel, Finn Partners, and The Door Restaurant Corp.
