“Carol”
“Strange girl you are. Flung out of space”

Is the beginning the end?
New York, this time the 50s. The stories of two women from two different backgrounds. The first one — married and rich, the second one — young and indecisive. So what is the connection between them? A common story. It starts at a toy shop while buying Christmas presents, on two opposite sides of the counter. However, a glimpse or a short conversation are not enough. Therese enters an unknown path, and Carol leads her. It would be too beautiful if it were so simple, though. Carol has got a family, a husband and a daughter. The relationship between a husband and a wife no longer exists, but the bond of the mother with her daughter does not allow for a full freedom of the woman. For her erntire life she has had to choose and give up what she really wanted. This time, however, it means something much more.
Light, smooth and delicate. The movie is slow but the pace is right. It allows the viewer to sink into the story and at the same time it gives time for the plot to develop. Watching this movie gives you an impression of observing the characters through the glass while sitting on the other side of the street.
“Carol” is filled with many great shots takan by Edward Lachman. Cate Blanchett portrayed calm and collected Carol, and sensitive Therese was played by Rooney Mara. Both of them, in my opinion, gave an amazing performance, showing each character very deeply. Certainly Todd Hayne‘s film is worth attention and it will still compete for awards.
So far the film has won recognition at Cannes and at Camerimage. It is nominated for Golden Globes in five categories. We will hear the results on 10th January 2016.
