Sexism is Hard to Explain
Kel Campbell

The millions of small ways that I’ve been forced to surrender to men, who made me move or change or come to them because they felt like it.

I felt like this statement shed light on the heart of the issue of subtle sexism. Blatant displays of sexist behavior, though still alive and well, have become increasingly socially unacceptable, but the underlying expectation for a woman to submit to the will of a man lingers, and many men construct their gender identity around it. These seemingly small transgressions (insisting on opening a door, backhanded compliments, subtle condescension, etc) are coming from the same place the large ones did, making them just as annoying, if not more so because of their passive and sneaky nature.
