The spoils of globalization aren’t limited to money. British politicians have in the past redistributed the monetary spoils of globalization (eg via working tax credits and child tax credits), but they’ve never managed to share the real life-enhancing spoils of globalization. It’s the reason social mobility is almost non-existent in the UK. It’s exacerbated by our unfair schooling system: you don’t get to discuss Louise Bourgeoise sculptures in a state school in Luton. Nor do you get to study Latin and learn about Sisyphus carting his boulder up the hill only to watch it roll down again for eternity. It’s the reason one half of our population views the EU as a hard-nosed foreign cartel while the other half views the EU as a beautiful social project with subordinate trading benefits.
Britain’s Political Economy is Changing. Labour needs to become relevant.
