REPORT FROM ABYSSAL CHAMBER 04

I vividly remember being cast into the abyss and large parts of what I did while I was there. Which is a tricky concept because it is a no place for non-things. My time there is a series of events that could be considered parallel to the “actual.” Mapping the actual to the unmanifest is the tricky part. Was I born lodged into these depths and ascended out or was this a kind of katabasis I have undergone and returned from? My thoughts lean toward the latter but this is contradicted by the nature of place, as it works backwards and forward through your history like a sea of erasure.

The first place to start with mapping these depths is the Impassible Gate, the entranceway to this strange land. To call it a gate is almost entirely inaccurate, it functions much more similarly to a filter, however that is the name of as the abyss had told me. This doorway, filters out the real. No real things exist in the abyss, so therefore to enter the abyss you must at least partially not exist. The brutality of this is inherent in both the process and the nature of the guardian of this passageway. To be cast down into the abyss means to be crushed into non-existence. I believe this is the beginning of the connection one has with the guardian. Planes are often considered to be both places and consciousnesses. And this place is a most peculiar one, so the processes of connecting your mind with its ends up in a more transformative (or reductive) result. So, if the gate is the guardian and the guardian is the abyss, this brings us back to the opening question of “What is the abyss?”

You might think the name implies emptiness, and while this is a place where you will be stretched so thin as to feel empty, it is actually a place that is quite full. The name, in regards to this version of it, implies depth and dark. It is a reminder that the physical is often metaphoric for the ideal and vis versa. The dark of the night and the dark of the psych are one in the same. You might be able to guess what it consists of through the nature of the gate-as-a-filter: the abyss is full of all things that do not exist. The living will of abyss, the manifestation of its craving to become real, is the being that takes the form of all non-real things. It tries to divide itself into disparate parts while at the same time being painfully aware that it is all of these things. There is essentially no possible separation between thing that does not exist and thing that does not exist. So not only is the abyss a place of the unreal, it is a place without boundaries. When cast into the abyss, you are a single part of the guardian of which it can not tell apart from any other part, and neither can you.

This is the place where you will stay forever. It will flawlessly weave itself into your past, present, and future. It will not only destroy your sense of self but also your ability to separate yourself from other people. If you are to return from this space you must first construct yourself again. This is the boon it grants you, you will be built stronger and better despite carrying its holy wounds forever, born again terrible & renewed. You will have so many impossible misunderstandings your peers and contemporaries will find strange but it is okay: you will be so, so beautiful.
