Fascinating story. I think the difference in the original case is that there was no other reason for the man to hold the door, other than perhaps a condescending conception of women. So I think it’s reasonable for the author to be more than a little annoyed. In your case, there is an objective difficulty, as your husband pointed out, with being a pregnant women. As such, it was reasonable of your husband to offer his seat, and rather rude of the women to reject it in such a way. Although I still have some empathy for her, as we can never know what wanders through the minds of others at any given time.
