CVPR 2020 Proceeding as Planned; Record 1470 Papers Accepted
Despite increasing COVID-19 concerns, organizers of this year’s Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR 2020) say the leading AI conference remains scheduled as planned, June 14 to 19 at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.
Last week CVPR publicly released its list of accepted Paper IDs, numbers assigned upon submission as part of the double blind review process. The schedule for the workshops program as well as a list of sponsors are also now available online. The authors, titles, and other details of the accepted papers will come later.
This year saw a record 1,470 papers accepted from 6,656 valid submissions (also a record). The paper acceptance rate fell to approximately 22 percent from 25 percent in 2019 and 29.6 percent in 2018.
It is in the nature of machine learning researchers to look for patterns in data, and so it was not surprising to see online discussions emerge around a curious gap in the accepted paper ID list — there are none in the range 3194 to 4224. On Reddit’s Machine Learning channel a user claiming to be a CVPR 2020 paper reviewer posted “no paper assigned to me between around 3100–4100.” There is speculation this might be because the system did not assign any IDs to this range. Meanwhile, others keen to analyze the paper ID list wondered about “the slow drop-off towards the higher IDs” in the paper list.
A leading global annual computer vision event, CVPR comprises a main conference and several co-located workshops and short courses. Last year’s conference attracted over 9,200 registered attendees from 68 countries.
Last Friday the World Health Organization upgraded the COVID-19 global risk to “very high” — the top level of risk assessment. Citing growing concerns around the coronavirus, Nvidia has canceled its GPU Technology Conference today, which would have brought over 10,000 people to San Jose, California in three weeks. Other recent cancellations due to coronavirus concerns include the Facebook F8 Developer Conference planned for May 6 to 8 also in San Jose, Google News Initiative Summit planned for late April in Sunnyvale, California, and the Game Developers Conference planned for March 16 to 20 in San Francisco.
Although CVPR 2020 remains on schedule, the official website notes that organizers are monitoring official travel advisories related to the coronavirus and will update information as appropriate. A “Travel and Safety Information” section was added to the website last week to provide travel tips and advice for attendees.
