As an American, this left/right summary feels off the mark. Either way, analyzing the crystallized fringes only helps to draw clearer boundaries. A less severe analysis — perhaps using an “averaged” center left vs. an “averaged” center right — would not only resonate with more people, but it could actually engender some mutual understanding. Providing a black vs. white dichotomy for readers to examine (and ultimately identify with, even if incompletely) seems only to push people apart, not together.
