I find myself outraged at this action against Muslim women. Why does modesty, a personal value that is informed by religion, have to be punished?

When we marry and want to be monogamous we are exercising a personal value informed by religion.

When we wait until marriage to have sex we are exercising a personal value informed by religion.

So many other things that we do in the western world under the guise of personal values and choices are simply things that we picked up (or that have been forced upon us) from religion.

This witch hunt, where they are targeting the women of today’s most feared religion is a petty practice of punishing the weak and innocent simply because they can be even loosely connected to the “Big Bads”.

Yes, radical Islamists are harming people worldwide. Yes, this is wrong. But stopping women from being able to enjoy both a public beach and their modesty is just plain bullying.

Stopping women from covering their bodies in public is not fixing anything. It’s mean, petty, and doing nothing but making the political climate worse.
