THE HUS.day 2018: Uniting International Tech and Sustainability Experts in Vaduz
Media Release — 2. September 2018
For the last two years, the Liechtenstein-based Think- and Action-Tank THE HUS.institute intensively engages with the consequences of the transition to the Digital Modern Era, which marks a turning point for humanity. On 1st September, the collective held THE HUS.day 2018 in Vaduz to inspire conversations through speeches and a workshop. The event formed around the matter of sustainability and potential in the Digital Modern. With speakers like Iranian innovator Reza Ghiabi and Marc Buckley, the Germany-based climate and sustainability expert, the gathering was internationally listed.

An ever returning motivation in the speeches was 6-months old Frieda, the youngest participant of this years’ THE HUS.day. “We have to consistently ask ourselves, how we will explain to humans like Frieda in 20 years, what we did and did not do today, to handle for example antidemocratic tendencies and climate change today”, stated Co-Founder and German futurist Christopher Peterka in his welcome speech. Marc Buckley, sustainability and climate-change-expert pointed out in his speech, that if humanity doesn’t change their behaviour and patterns radically, Frieda and especially her kids won’t have desirable living conditions on this planet.

Rudi Hilti, Liechtensteiner entrepreneur and Co-Founder of THE HUS.institute points out, that “it is super important, that these uncomfortable topics and paradigm shifts in the Digital Modern get identified, collectively discussed and constructively transformed.” The third main-speaker, Arthur Brock completed the panel with an inspiring talk around the alternative approach on currencies and introduced Holo and Holochain. During and after the intensive afternoon, participants of THE HUS.day could also take inspiration and impulse from a workshop curated by delegates of the ETH Zurich as well as University of Zurich. Alexander Langguth, Marija Spokaite, Petrissa Eckle and Paul Wöbkenberg wanted to identify different denominators around the topic: “Reinventing communities — eco villages”.
Another highlight marked the presentation of Benedict Aicher and Christian Michalski from the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) Berlin, who introduced the conference DigitalFuture Summit curated by students for students. They pointed out how important it is, that conferences about future and digitisation shouldn’t be about big companies and their missions but should tackle the needs and visions of the future generation and connect them.
With more that 50 guests over the course of the event, THE HUS.day 2018 was a beautiful chance to get connected and inspired from speeches but also the very diverse audience and the moments in between.

In the Digital Modern Era, which we are currently entering, rules of economy and society are literally turned inside out. Exponential digital innovation and human-made phenomenons like globalisation escalate the disruption of “the old world”. “The resultant highly complex new rules have to be identified and used in favour of a holistically sustainable future. We are constantly bringing humans from diverse professional and social backgrounds together to discuss about, and work on, these profound paradigm shifts of the Digital Modern,” states Co-Founder and German Futurist Christopher Peterka.
Rudi Hilti, Co-Founder, Liechtensteiner and Entrepreneur, draws a positive balance after the first two years. Twenty-seven members from nine countries gathered for Transformers’ Day on August 31 to decrypt and develop visions and missions. The expanded network that has emerged makes a dent. For example, THE HUS.institute is in exchange with renowned institutions such as the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) or cultural establishments like Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin. Right after their home base gatherings, the core team will travel to Malmö, Sweden to curate a unique two-part workshop at the innovative congress “The Conference” and spread its mission internationally.
