Colin Kaepernick is an American Story, Physical Mail, and Football Demonstrates Character

Like many times on a Friday, I am writing this from a hotel room. So from an airport hotel near BWI, I bring you “TK Thoughts of the Week”:

  1. The Colin Kaepernick protest has dominated the news lately. My opinion on it is one that has changed over the last few weeks. My first reaction was one of dismay. Not standing to support the country that provides you a great life seemed pretty odd to me. But then I took a few days and tried to look at the situation from another angle. My new perspective lead me from dismay to thoughtfulness. At the heart of the situation, Mr. Kaepernick is attempting to draw attention to an issue that he believes needs to be addressed (racial inequality in the U.S.). He has been thoughtful and genuine in his discussion about the topic. He drew attention to his position and he has done it in a completely peaceful way. Conversations are happening among parties on this topic which would have never happened if he didn’t take this step. He took a stand about an issue like a man should when he believes in something. You don’t have to agree with him on every aspect of the issue, but you have to appreciate him for taking an approach that set aside his personal comfort to open dialogues that may have a positive impact on our country. At the core, this situation is about creating peaceful, thoughtful discussions from all perspectives and how is that not what the United States of America should be about?
  2. I love getting physical mail. This week, I got a thank you note card from David Rees. There is something special about going to the mailbox and getting a handwritten note. Having that paper in your hand with the writing from a person half way around the world is a great feeling.
  3. For many years, I played and coached the game of football. Unlike any other sport that I have been a part of, it truly draws out the character of the people that are playing. I think it is the physical nature of the game that makes this happen. Having eleven people physically try to impose their will on another eleven people who are dead set to stop them, extracts the essence of what you are. Layer in the fact that there is a greater camaraderie in this team sport than any other athletic effort and you have something that is truly special.

May your weekend be filled with fast horses, lots of smiles, and a touch of bourbon.
