Getting through college isn’t easy. Thomas Rucker Methvin has been working hard since high school in order to prepare for his future, both in college and the professional world. Now in his final year, he has some useful advice for incoming freshmen and students still in high school.
The first piece of advice he has is take adequate notes. Note taking is an important part of school, especially if you go to a college with a greater student base. The bigger the classes, the harder it is to get individual attention, so teachers rely on lectures in order to teach the material.
In addition to taking good notes, make sure you develop a study system for upcoming exams. There is a major difference between high school and college examinations; you have to be ready in order to pass them with good grades.
Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you go to a bigger school with more students, teachers understand that you may have questions outside class.
Thomas Rucker Methvin was a varsity golfer during his time at high school, playing in the 9th, 11th and 12th grades. He enjoys the sport immensely and wishes to encourage new players with the following tips that should help them get started.
Driving Ranges
Before trying your hand at a full course, consider heading to the driving range to practice a little. This will allow you to get to grips with the techniques you must use in order to hit the ball well and ensure it goes in the intended direction. In some cases, you may find that the local driving range also offers tuition that will allow you to further improve on your technique.
Get a Coach
Whether it’s a friend or a professional, it always helps to have somebody available who can show you the finer points of the game. Trying to learn entirely on your own will often lead to issues with your technique that will take a while to work out of your system once you start playing on a regular basis.
Make it Fun
Don’t approach the game with a competitive mindset, at least at first. Try to simply enjoy playing when you first start, as this will provide added motivation to continue. If that motivation is there, then every time you pick up a club can be considered practice, meaning your game will progress as your interest increases.
Understand Your Equipment
Thomas Rucker Methvin has found that many novices find it difficult to pick the right club for their shot. Happily, this is an issue that is easily remedied through coaching and a little bit of research.
