TRC’s top training moments in 2017
Next year is a biggie for TRC- It’s our twentieth birthday! The last of the teenage years has been a busy one for us: we’ve trained over 100 individuals through our flagship programmes and short courses, travelled the globe to meet with some of the biggest names in TV and Digital, developed brand new courses and somehow found the time to pack our bags and move to a new home. Here’s a flavour of our ‘best bits’ and a look ahead to the plans for our big birthday year.

Putting Scotland on the Map, Women in Tech & New Horizons
In 2017 we continued to run our highly successful digital training programmes Cross Creative and Special Edition through which we were lucky to work with some of Scotland’s top digital talent. Each programme comprised six in-house workshops at TRC plus an international trip to meet with heavy-hitters of the digital world.
London and Berlin were on the agenda in January for our Special Edition trip- where we visited Google, Doteveryone, Soundcloud and more, plus a host of inspiring women in the industry- including legend of the advertising world Dame Cilla Snowball. Full details on the trip here.
In March we headed Stateside with the Cross Creative delegates- to San Francisco’s tech super hub of Silicon Valley. Private meetings at Facebook, Twitter and Dropbox (to name a few!) ensured shedloads of inspiration and put seven Scottish companies on the international map. It was with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to the Cross Creative and Special Edition classes of 2017 in the Spring, but the Summer brought about two new programmes and with them new talent and exciting new international destinations.
Special Edition: Celebrating women in Scotland’s digital sector 👩💻
After our most competitive application process yet, we met the Special Edition class of 2018 in August for the first monthly training session. Workshops so far have covered themes ranging from goal setting to leadership and personal branding, with more exciting workshops planned for 2018.
In November we broke new territory and visited the Netherlands for the first time, where we attended the European Women in Tech conference in Amsterdam and had a jam-packed schedule of meetings with some of the coolest companies in the city, including Booking.com and TomTom.
Cross Creative: Scotland’s Digital Leaders to take on Canada
From one digital programme to the next- we launched the tenth edition of Cross Creative in November, welcoming eight digital leaders from Scotland’s vibrant digital and tech scene. It’s early days yet, but we’re excited to see where 2018 takes this brilliant bunch (aside from Canada…where we’ll be heading in March on our trip to the famous Toronto-Waterloo Corridor!)

It’s been a great year for TRC’s telly side too. In January we visited the major U.K broadcasters in London with our New Horizons programme, securing meetings with commissioners and senior industry leaders. In March we went a little further afield with the International Development Programme, which connected Scottish and Northern Irish TV companies with U.S broadcasters in New York and Washington D.C.
‘One of the challenges of working in the regions is getting yourself in front of the influential decision makers at broadcasters. New Horizons got us in the rooms with some of the largest names in the industry such as Patrick Holland and Jay Hunt to name a few. This sort of access in invaluable.’

Not only did we have face time with commissioners we might not have otherwise met, going with such a strong group shone a light on the great work coming out of Scotland and Northern Ireland overall.
Natalie Hill, Hello Halo
In October we launched a brand new programme for television production companies based in the Nations and Regions of the UK. SuperSizer: Big Ideas for Returning Series (or SuperSizer for short!) has brought together 12 top development executives (the ideas folk in telly) for a 6 month programme that will arm the delegates with the skills and contacts to win big commissions for returnable series.
Finally… we were privileged to deliver training for Creative Skillset in 2017. In November we hosted training for the Production Co-ordinator Programme, welcoming new entrants to the magical world of television.
We finished off the year with our Line Producer Programme, supported by the High End TV Levy Fund, managed by Creative Skillset. Over an intensive week of training we brought together highly experienced TV professionals looking to enhance their skills and make the move to the role of a Line Producer for High End TV. The week was a brilliant success and we’re looking forward to seeing the future Line Producers again in 2018!

And that’s just the training!
It’s been quite the year for training at TRC. As well as the above, we’ve also hosted monthly Creative Breakfasts and other events with some top names from the broadcast and digital world and moved to a new home!
