A Second Opportunity

A Path To Educational Success

My story is one of overcoming challenges, going outside my comfort zone and finding ways to succeed. Being bi-racial I have faced many challenges regarding where I fit in, but even bigger than that were my challenges in the classroom. As far back as the first grade I have been on an Individualized Education Program (IEP) in my public school system. I remember being made the target of kids, sometimes my friends, labeling me “stupid” or “dumb” when I was pulled out of classes. Throughout my school years there were plenty of days I did not want to go to school because I worried about reading out loud in class or giving a presentation. Hearing students laugh as I read too slow and choppy made me feel inferior to others. It was not until the end of tenth grade that I had testing done and learned I had a Language Based Learning Disability (LBLD). I was further tested and was diagnosed with a severe case of dyslexia. After my mother hired a tutor for me from The Landmark School my journey started.

In public school I was being pushed through the system because I was a respectful student and played sports. By the end of my junior year I was about to graduate within one year reading at a seventh / eighth grade level. Fortunately, The Landmark School stepped in to help me at this crucial time and I was given the opportunity to do two years at this amazing school. Although I had to leave all my friends that I had been with since the first grade and not get to graduate with them, I left willingly and accepted this opportunity. Landmark has changed everything about me, from my outlook on learning, my confidence, to setting a path for a successful future. Learning is no longer something I dread but something I look forward to every day.

I have been taught that I do not have a disability but rather that I learn differently than others. I have been given the tools to overcome this difference and set me up to succeed in the classroom. The teachers, counselors, administration, and overall environment at The Landmark School has changed my life. I only wish I had found out about my learning disability sooner. I am more confident and eager to take on the next chapter in my life, college.
