Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was recognized in the early 1970s in large part due to diagnosis of the United States military veterans. It was Officially recognized by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980.
PTSD is a serious mental health condition that can develop after a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatic or terrifying event in which serious physical harm occurred or was threatened. PTSD is a lasting consequence of traumatic ordeals that cause intense fear, helplessness or horror. PTSD keeps the person from living a normal life.
About 3.6% of adult Americans — about 5.2 million people — an estimated 7.8 million Americans will experience PTSD at some point in their lives.
