When you’re talking about a platform, will this be a truly open platform with an open api, something open source like wordpress or even a predraft for a w3 specification?
Because only then, I think, if every major browser can integrate it without being worried about a single company’s ownership, this can truly become a “platform” instead of a siloed feature.
I’ve been using pocket for quite a while now, and I’m glad you guys are successful. ☺
Though I must say that most of the items I save, I never get around to read. Instead, I even hesitate to open the app because it is so overwhelming with unread content. I know, this is not a very rational decision, but an emotional one. But hey: humans are emotional. And reinforced by the stats (50% read) in your post, I ain’t be the only one. So maybe your UI design should also be a bit more “emotional”. (whatever that means, right?)
Well, let me explain:
What I would like to see from Pocket on a UI Level is some feature like spotify. Like to have articles sorted by a “mood” or Medium’s “reading time”, rather than just having a long neverending list.
You can keep the list/grid, but there should also be a sidebar with filtering options, e.g. by “interest” (Politics, climate change), “reading time” (like some light 2 -3 mins reads one can consume while commuting), or “mood” (relaxing, engaging, inspirational).
Also, for all those long articles that just contain to much text to get to the grain of information, a “machine-condensed synopsis” (you know, because all the cool kids do AI now-a-days) would be great to have.
(e.g. a resumé segmented in sections that are on-click expandable, allowing to read the original text’s full paragraph if interested).
Last but not least: a feature to convert articles into audiobooks / read text, would spiral pocket into a whole new layer of user groups: people who like to listen to informations while commuting or working on simple tasks (like exporting .pngs from a design). Mix in some music between articles (partner with a music provider like.. um, spotify?) and you can even compete with radio stations.
yours,
- Tom
PS: Make sure to use a pleasant computer voice for the reading feature.
PS2: For the filtering part, there are tagging engine api’s for websites.
