Why Working For a Small Startup Might Be Worth It

Unless you’ve been living under a rock these past couple years, you know that the crew here at Synapse International specializes in startup recruitment. Contrary to popular belief, startups are popping up left, right and center. The term ‘startup’ itself is pretty loosely defined. For the purposes of this article, let’s go with companies that are less than 3 years old, are under 30 employees, and have raised less than $10 million in funding. As I’m faced with objections on an hourly basis, mostly based around company security, let me tell you why joining a startup is the best career move you can make today.
1.Your work is your playground — Having the flexibility to implement React, Elixir, Go, or other technologies you are passionate about is awesome. Those side projects you share on GitHub, well now you can build real products in frameworks that you love.

2. Sense of family — Startups hire on culture, so you’ll be surrounded by supportive and like-minded people. This positive energy will not only improve the quality of your work but your overall morale as well.
3. Gratification in ownership of Work — Not to be brash, but It’s a pretty darn good feeling to be able to say that you were resourceful, scrounged together enough resources, and were primarily responsible for releasing something that had a meaningful impact on your users.

4. Substantial stock options — We all know there’s no guarantees to an exit, but if you’re one of the first guys through that door, there’s a chance you’ll cash out big.
5. Constant Learning — I was once told to always surround yourself with people better than yourself, and when you find that you’re the best in the group, surround yourself with new people. One of the single most important things in life is to always be learning and improving yourself. Working at a startup allows you to work side-by-side with executives and former executives; allowing you to learn first hand from people better than you.

6. There will always be ‘big company’ jobs — No hiring manager will knock you for working at a startup. We constantly hear from top CTO’s that people can’t ‘hide their skills’ at a startup. Upon leaving a startup your capacity for greater responsibilities will naturally increase, and people are going to love to have someone who doesn’t need their hands held on their team.
