I’m not entirely sure I agree here. I think one of the major reasons for FBs success was the standardization of profile pages, in contrast with the mish-mash of MySpace. A FB profile page is where I can go to get an immediate and more holistic picture of someone I’ve just met (or an existing friend) than anywhere else on (or off) the Internet.
I agree with you that the hero worship is silly and inaccurate. I guess at best, it’s a recruiting tool: top talent wants to work for dynamic, ‘visionary’ management. It’s easier to talk about how awesome working for Zuckerberg (insert tech celeb here) is than about working as part of a balanced, collaborative team.
