With the hope of improving upon a positive finish to the 2016 season, the New York Yankees signed several big-name free agents this winter, including Matt Holliday. A 13-year Major League Baseball (MLB) veteran, Holliday signed a one-year, $13 million contract with the Yankees in December 2016. He played last season for the St. Louis Cardinals, where he hit 20 homeruns and drove in 62 runs, but the team declined to pick up his $17 million option for the 2017 season.
He projects to be the designated hitter for the Yankees, filling a hole left by the retired Mark Teixiera. Holliday will join a lineup that consists of established veterans Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner and promising young players like Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez. In 1,773 career games, the seven-time all-star has 295 homeruns, 1,153 runs batted in, and a .303 batting average.
