Gasp-worthy exchange brings to light Veterans’ Affairs progress

“I’m working on the future sir, and I’m going to correct the past…that is what our Veterans want!” — VA Secretary Bob McDonald

Rep Mike Coffman “attacked” VA Secretary Bob McDonald at the House Veterans Affairs Committee VA 2015 Budget hearing. Coffman proceeded to tell Sec McDonald what “he needs to do” to fix the VA issues in his district.

“I fundamentally believe…at the end of the day…you will not have made a difference in changing the culture of this organization…” — Rep Mike Coffman

Prompting Secretary McDonald’s to respond.

“I’m offended…I’ve been here six months you’ve been here longer than I have if there’s a problem in Denver I think you own it more than I do.”
“I’m working on the future sir, and I’m going to correct the past…that is what our Veterans want!” — VA Secretary Bob McDonald

Secretary McDonald invited Rep Coffman to dialogue with Veterans online and the Veteran service organizations that were present for feedback on the changes being made throughout the VA. Rep Coffman left the hearing before it was over.

Not everyone on the commission felt the same way as Rep Mike Coffman. Tim Walz, who also sits on the Veterans Affairs Committee proceeded to take ownership of decisions the committee has made as well as praising Sec McDonald’s leadership.
