#1 Sugar Ray Robinson

Born on 3 May 1921 in the small town of Ailey, Georgia, this Hall of Fame boxer is considered by many to the greatest boxer of all-time. Any surprise that he’s a true-bred Taurus?

Before suffering his first loss fight against Jake LaMotta on 5 February 1943, Sugar Ray had gone 40 and 0. H would later avenge his defeat to Lamotta two weeks later on 26 February 1943 at Madison Square Garden, in New York.

Sugar Ray would go on a record run of 88 fights undefeated (86 wins and 2 draws).

Known for his fleet footedness and incredible defence, Robison invented the flashy pugilist personality. Robinson retired from boxing with a record of 173–19–6 (2 no contests) with 108 knockouts in 200 professional bouts, ranking him among the all-time leaders in knockouts.

He died on 12 April 1989 in Los Angeles, California.

#2 Sugar Ray Leonard

Ray Charles Leonard, born 17 May 1956 in Wilmington, North Carolina, was an Olympic Gold medallist, five division world champion and lineal champion in three divisions as well as undisputed at welterweight. Leonard was part of “The Fabulous Four”, a group of all-times greats consisting of Leonard, Roberto Durán, Thomas Hearns, and Marvin Hagler, who all fought each other in the 1980s.

With his flashy fighting style, ruthless determination, willingness to fight anyone, fancy footwork and brilliant speed, there is no wonder this man was born a Taurus.

Considered by many of the all-time great fighters, he is probably best known for his back-to-back fights against Roberto Duran. Although suffering a decision loss in a 15 round epic battle in the first fight, he would go on to avengedhis first career loss by getting the Panamanian warrior Duran to quit in in the 8th round screaming “No mas…no mas”. Leonard and Duran would later complete their trilogy in 1989, with Sugar Ray winning by an unanimous decision in a 12 round marathon.

Leonard would finish his career with a 37–3–1 record. After coming out of retirement three year retirement in 1987, he beat Hagler, downed Donny Lalonde, drew to Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns at Caesar’s Palace in June 1989 and dismantled Durand before losing his final two fights to Terry Noris and Hector Camacho.

#3 Joe Louis

Born on 13 May 1934 in LaFayette, Alabama, Joe “Brown Bomber” Louis reigned as the world heavyweight champion from 1937 to 1949. He is considered, by many, as one of the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time. Louis’ reigned as champion for 140 consecutive months, a century for most astrological signs, but just long enough for a Taurus.

Louis is widely regarded as the first African-American to achieve hero status in the US.

Louis is probably best remembered for twice fighting Max Schmelling (the great champion of Nazi Germany), losing the first fight in a 12th round knock out in 1936, and later avenging his loss in 1938 with a devastating 1st round knock out.

Joe Louis had only three losses in his 69 professional fights, racking up 52 knockouts. After returning from retirement in 1950, Louis failed to regain championship status, sadly ending his career with a knockout defeat to Rocky Marciano in 1951.

#4 Sonny Liston

Charles L. “Sonny” Liston, born on 8 May 1932 in Sand Slough Arkansas, became world heavyweight champion in 1962 after knocking out Floyd Patterson in the first round, repeating the knockout the following year in defense of the title.

As with most Taurus born boxer, Liston’s renowned toughness and long reach were only overshadowed by his dynamite power and intimidating stature.

Liston fought Mohammed Ali twice ー both loses, including a 1st round KO in May 1965.

Dabbling in acting and politics, Sonny will always be remembered for his boxing prowess and signature punching power ー ending his career with 50 wins and 4 loses.

Not your typical power-ridden Taurus fighter, Mayweather was known for his elusive shoulder roll defence, quick feet and fast jab.

He finished his career with 59 wins and 13 loses, during which time he fought all-time greats such as Julio César Chavez, Pernell Whittaker and Kostya Tszyu.

Jermall has an identical twin, also a boxer, named Jermell who is a unified world champion at light middleweight.

Jermall is an extremely skilled boxer, with fast hands and as with many Taurus boxers, devastating power in his right hand. Despite his talent, his only real challenge came against Austin Trout in May 2016, beating him in 12 rounds with a unanimous decision.

He is currently undefeated with 31 wins and 22 coming by way of knockout.

In the mid-2000s, Lacy was a widely regarded as the biggest puncher in the super middleweight division. Thanks to his athletic physique and knockout record, he was considered by many as one of boxing’s bright young prospects.

Lacy’s Taurus-esque power was eventually subdued after suffering losses to both Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones.

Jeff Lacy would finish his career with 27 wins and 6 loses.

#8 Carlos Baldomir

Born on 30 April 1971 in Santa Fe, Argentine, Carlos Baldomir held the WBC, The Ring, and lineal welterweight titles in 2006, eventually challenging for the WBC super welterweight title in 2007.

He had a long and historic career from 1993 to 2014, competiting in 71 fightsーwith 49 wins, 16 loses and 6 draws. He fought the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Arturo Gatti, Canelo Alvarez and Zab Judah.

Despite a rare and star-studded boxing career, he is almost definitely the most disgraceful Taurus-born boxer in history, having been convicted in 2019 to 18 years in prison for molesting his 8 year old daughter. A troubled man, who didn’t live up to his star sign.

#9 Callum Smith

Born on 23 April 1990 in Liverpool, England, Callum Smith is the current WBA and Ring Magazine super-middleweight champion as of 23 November 2019.

He is the youngest boy in the prolific Smith fighting family, with his brothers Paul, Stephen and Liam all boxers in their own right.

He is currently undefeated, with 27 wins, with 19 coming by way of knock-out.

His twin brother Jermall (yes the spelling in so close!) is also a champion boxer with a pristine 31–0 record.

Jermell has 34 wins and that one loss, having also been tested against Austin Trout and Gabriel Rosado.
