May 26, 2017: Achilles International

There’s a line from the Wicked song “For Good” that Sheryl Sandberg shares in her book, Option B:

“I do believe that I have been changed for the better. And because I knew you, I have been changed for good.”

When I saw that line while reading I immediately shared it with my family, as we all believe this to be wholeheartedly accurate when it comes to our Brandon. Even before Brandon passed, he made all of us who we are today.

Viscardi Day at the Mets game on May 24, 2017

Growing up I volunteered at Brandon’s school and came to know, love, and become a part of his Viscardi family. It was a true gift being able to share in the 5th Annual Viscardi Day at the Met’s game this past Wednesday and re-connect with so many who are a part of this amazing community.

Running with Romeo at the 2015 Achilles Hope & Possibility 5-Miler

Moving to NYC, I longed for a similar community that embraces and empowers individuals with different abilities. I found this exactly 2 years ago on my first run with the Achilles International NYC chapter, and this 26th I am donating to Achilles in memory of my special twin brother who continues to propel me to be a better person each day.

For those who have never heard of Achilles, its mission is parallel to that of Viscardi: “to enable people with all types of disabilities to participate in mainstream running events in order to promote personal achievement.”

They organize runs every week in Central Park (Tuesdays 6:15pm, Saturdays 10:15am) & Prospect Park (Thursdays, 6pm). June 25th is their annual Achilles “Hope & Possibility” 4-mile race in Central Park. If you are in NYC, I highly encourage you to join the race and/or organization. It is one of the most amazing groups of people I have had the privilege of being a part of! Please feel free to reach out if you’d like to get involved. #GoAchilles
