THIS LIMITATION IS one of the fundamental reasons why many of the modern short text-based messaging models such as email and chat, has been fraught with problems of not conveying tone.
It is indeed a very interesting idea that emoticons/emoji may help bring back tone and emotion into such modes, and therefore ultimately reduce the misalignment rate between sender and recipient.
