PEOPLE YOU HELPED, DO NOT OWE YOU ONE

A tough lesson God Is Teaching me.

I will try as much as possible to convey my thoughts on this subject.

As individuals, we lend a helping hand once in a while, and we expect that reciprocated. But most of the times it is never reciprocated.

For example; you have a friend that has been living off you because he’s having trouble with his finances and even accommodation.

Then somehow along the way luck shines upon him, things start going really well, like, really really well. And he’s super rich.

On Instagram, he’s hanging out at cool places with all cool people. He’s having so much fun.

Then you try reaching out to him a couple of times, after all, he ‘owes’ you.

You assume since you were there when he had nothing, he’d appreciate and acknowledge that fact.

But what happens? He doesn’t return your calls or replies to your messages. It seems like you never existed to him.

I’d admit, situations like that hurt, they hurt so much. You feel stupid and used.

I don’t know if it’s the right thing to say, but those are the emotions that build up in me.

The thing is this: The fact you helped someone when they needed you doesn’t mean they will help you when you need or even keep you in their lives when they need you no more in their lives.

In the Good Book, we see an example of being unappreciated for doing good.

The book of Luke 17– 11: 19. It says:

1 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy[a] met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”
14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed.
15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice.16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him and he was a Samaritan.
17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

On the other hand, do not forget people that were rungs on your ladder to success; be it your family or friends. They helped you so you could be where you are today.

If you feel you are owed something for helping people out. Sadly, we do not always what we deserve.

If you find you are going through the same situation again, imagine your self as the legendary Superman, he saves a lot of people and gets little to no appreciation

I’ll leave you with the words of Dr. Norman V. Peale in his book, Positive Thinking For Young People

He said the way to happiness is:

Keep your heart free from hate, expect little, give much. Forget self, think of others.

I wish you a happy and fulfilled life.
