How America Spreads the Disease that is Racism by not Confronting Racist Family Members and Friends
April Harter, LCSW

As a future public health professional, I acknowledge the concept of racism as a mental illness. If public health looked at domestic racist actions as an outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would declare an epidemic, and World Health Organization would recognize that we’re in the middle of a full-fledged pandemic. The language would change as well, as the descriptor of ‘alt-right’ sanitizes the hate-filled racists, just as those who were responsible for perpetrating intimate partner violence were depicted as having a ‘personal problem.’
