How To Make Yourself A Priority When You Don’t Have Time

No one can understand the life of an overwhelmed entrepreneur like another overwhelmed entrepreneur. (Can I get a heck yes?) Client work, social media, bookkeeping … client projects. Emails to write, proposals to draft, phone calls to return, websites to update. Sometimes, owning/operating/growing a successful business feels like trying to shovel the driveway during a blizzard. Like we’re putting out a lot of effort, yet aren’t getting anywhere.

When you’re booked to the max and trying to keep your head above water, taking care of yourself is most likely the last thing on your mind. Clients come first! And your family needs you. So how do you justify carving out time that doesn’t seem to exist, to “sit around and do nothing?”

While it might go against all your frazzled entrepreneurial instincts, taking care of you is the task that should be way up on the top of your priority list.

It’s true! You know, how, when you’re on an airplane, you’re instructed to put the oxygen mask on yourself first, before helping anyone else? The same principle applies here. If you’re not taking time to rest/breathe/connect with you, you’re not going to be any good to anybody else … including your clients.

Taking time to rest, breathe and connect with yourself will make you a better business owner!

I challenge you to start right now (well, maybe after you finish reading this article) to schedule break times. That’s it. Simple. Every hour of your workday, take five just for you. This doesn’t mean checking email, washing dishes, or updating Facebook. Those tasks don’t count as breaks.

Some of the ways you might use your five-minute breaks include:

  • Going for a walk
  • Moisturizing your skin
  • Laying down and closing your eyes
  • Doing some yoga
  • Drinking a cup of coffee or tea (actually savoring it!)
  • Reading a book
  • Painting your nails
  • Praying
  • Snuggling a pet
  • Calling a friend
  • Stretching
  • Listening to the birds
  • Breathing
  • Meditating
  • Sitting in the sunshine
  • Cranking up the music and dancing
  • Writing or reading poetry
  • Or nothing … nothing at all!

Whatever fills you up … do more of that. Five minutes, ten minutes, fifteen if you can. Every hour, stop what you’re doing and give yourself your full attention. Nothing bad will happen. The world won’t screech to a halt if you take a break. Never put yourself on the back burner. You are just as worthy of your time as your clients, your spouse, or your children. Set a timer and do it!

And if you’re simply feeling too overwhelmed to take time out for yourself, consider tapping out, calling uncle, and getting some help! Find a team that can take some , or all, of those overwhelming marketing tasks off your hands (ahem), and get things under control before you burn yourself out! Life is too short. You’ve got to take time out to smell the flowers and smile.

So how about you? What can you do to add a little “me” time into your day?
