It goes beyond mere numbers. I’ve lived most of my life in Massachusetts. New England is not just overwhelmingly white, it is an extremely sheltered form of white. Most of New England honestly believes that America’s race issues all got straightened out in the sixties and seventies. We think there is no racism in this country because we never see any. How could we? There’s nothing but white people up here. So when we see race problems in the news, we think it’s geographically specific. The truth is, though, that it’s our ignorance of America’s racism that’s regional. And Bernie seems to suffer from it.
