Tribler

You know your standard torrent software right? The one with the annoying intrusive ads. Well that one applies to Windows users. Ubuntu and OSX users enjoy the sleek and sexy Transmission client. You know what tops transmission? It may not sleek but Tribler is packed with features.

Hate waiting for a movie o download? You don’t have to! Tribler has the ability to “stream” torrents. Instead of downloading whatever random bit of the file that first comes in, tribler can force a torrent stream to issue bits that align with the beginning of the file. It takes a little while to kick in but after the initial wait your good to go!

VLC

Funky. Orange. Cone. Mascot. I have no idea why the icon for this package is a cone but it packs more codecs per capita than any other half baked media player. Can’t play a movie file? Codec problems? With VLC I got 99 problems but a codec ain’t one B****!

Firefox

You know what the hell this is.

LibreOffice

Hate paying Microsoft for deprecated recycled software? Its backwards compatible with most Office file types. Open Source Java based Office Suite with Microsoft compatibility.

7zip

It handles almost any archive you throw at it. Why the hell do people still compress files with RAR? Well this handy dandy program handles decompression of almost any archive, Zip, RAR, TAR, ect. The cure for the plague that is proprietary software packages such as RAR.

TruCrypt

Encrypts your drive on the fly. Yes that’s right you can still use your computer while it encrypts it! One word. Amazing.
