1. Learn to Participate

The first and the foremost tip for an individual to perform well in a GD is to learn the art of participation. Don’t expect others to force you to speak. Take the initiative, participate in the discussion and share your ideas with others.

2. Take the initiative!

Initiative here means being the first one to jump into the discussion as soon as the moderator asks the GD to get started. Group Discussions are short, timed events. Individual taking the lead can immediately establish a sense of superiority.

It shows your confidence level and positive perspectives.

3. Have a lot of content to speak,

Read a lot

Always begin your day with the newspaper and know what is happening around you. An individual must be aware of the current affairs and events to succeed well in a group discussion.

GD’s are all about having specific and to the point ideas of the given topic and presenting them in the 15 minutes time you have!

4. Be assertive yet humble

This might sound confusing but you don’t need to refrain from getting so loud or forceful that it makes you look like a habitual arguer. Group Discussions are aimed at evaluating yours soft skills, convincing ability, self-confidence and the ability to think on your feet.

Always keep in mind that the other person is also as learned as you. Always listen to what he is saying and then only respond.

5. Always be Alert!

A participant usually gets around 15 minutes to think about the topic. You need tothink fast and cover as much as you can. Always take care of your words. The content has to be sensible, crisp and well supported with examples or real life situations.

6. Positive Attitude is the key

A positive body language helps immensely. Be confident, but not over confident. Make eye contact with all the participants.

Even if you don’t have sufficient knowledge to tear through the discussion, use some humour to win a few points. This will make you appear like a confident individual with handy survival tactics.

Be calm, composed, confident and neutral. Present your views like a mature individual to create an impression and win the discussion! All the best!
