Top 5 Best Coffee Shops to Study

By Alexa Baran

If you’re like me, the idea of going to Starbucks to study is dreadful. The lines are long, the environment is lacking and the coffee is average. Don’t get me wrong, I go to Starbucks quite often for my daily dose of caffeine. However, in a thriving city like Austin, there are plenty of unique coffee shops that have the combination of a great study environment and a perfect cup of coffee. I created a list of the top 5 coffee shops near campus that contains this ideal blend.

1. Alta’s Café

Honestly, the location of Alta’s Café makes it my absolute favorite coffee shop. It is located right on the Hike & Bike Trail in the Waller Creek Boathouse and overlooks Lady Bird Lake. This shop is the perfect spot to enjoy a beautiful Austin day sipping on coffee and finishing some homework. I have spent an entire Sunday just relaxing on the patio and enjoying the gorgeous view. Not only does Alta’s have exceptional coffee, but also offers smoothies and several healthy food options. Alta’s Café provides its customers with an amazing atmosphere and a killer view. Beware you may never want to leave!

2. Caffe Medici

I frequently go to this coffee shop because of its close proximity to campus.

Located on Guadalupe, it is a great spot to go study between classes and get a quality cup of coffee. Caffe Medici has a warm and welcoming environment that makes it the ideal for team collaboration and projects. The first floor is perfect to grab coffee with friends, while the upstairs area is great for spending a couple hours to catch up on schoolwork. This is a student’s paradise!

3. Houndstooth

Run by two brothers, the Houndstooth aims in creating a space that brings people from all walks of life together. Unlike most coffee shops that only brew a couple different types of coffee, the Houndstooth carriers multiple roasters from around the country. Here you can enjoy great company, a good cup of coffee and a delicious pastry. What more could you ask for?

4. Dominican Joe Coffee Shop

Located in the heart of Austin, Dominican Joe is a favorite for many. This shop is very spacious and has a ton of outlets! It is a wonderful place to be productive while also satisfying that caffeine fix. Not only is the coffee and atmosphere reason enough to go, Dominican Joe also works with a non-profit to improve the education in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. So while you are enjoying your cup of coffee, you are also helping to improve the lives of others.

5. Wright Bros. Brew and Brew

This is a coffee shop I have personally not been to but one that is definitely on my list! Brew& Brew has a simple and elegant menu that anyone would enjoy. The light, warm space and friendly staff is what continuously draws people to this space. A great place to have a study group or simply enjoy a good book.
